History and concept of industrial style

The history of the industrial style in the interior goes back to the 20s of the last century – during the Great Depression in the USA. It was then that the abandoned industrial facilities became the haven of young artists, sculptors.

The industrial style in the interior was formed by the 60s of the XX century. A striking example of this was the “Factory” – Andy Warhol’s studio.

Industrial style direction

Now in this style of room design there are two areas:

  • Natural industrial design in the industrial style. It is typical for converted factory premises. The basis of the design project is based on existing attributes: ventilation, pipe, wall and floor decoration.
  • Artificial industrial style. It is used to create interiors in residential, retail or entertainment facilities. All attributes of the industrial zone are created on purpose, are imitation.

Characteristic features of industrial-style interiors:

  • high ceilings;
  • big windows;
  • the unification of space, the absence of partitions, false walls;
  • communication objects left in sight;
  • minimalistic decor using concrete, metal.

For interior design, discreet colors are used. Natural shades are diluted with a minimum of bright accents.

Materials used for industrial-style interiors

Design in an industrial style involves the use of rough, textured materials: concrete, brick, metal. The emphasis is on untreated, aged surfaces.

Metal structures are always matte, with traces of corrosion, patina. More often than other materials use aluminum, iron, steel.

For the decoration of the walls using raw brick, rough or textured plaster. They are combined with unpolished concrete.

Industrial-style flooring is given special attention. Cast iron plates are used as materials. Floors are poured with concrete, trimmed with natural “wild” stone. It is permissible to use floorboards or laminate.

To “soften” the interior, it includes elements from raw or aged wood, glass. At the same time, the feeling of unfinished, deliberate rudeness is preserved in the interior.

Playing with textures makes rooms in an industrial style not only visually unusual and attractive: attention is also focused on tactile sensations from contact with surfaces.

Industrial style colors

They bring industrial aesthetics to the interior; color misuse is inappropriate. Laconic colors are used:

  • white;
  • Gray;
  • the black;
  • khaki;
  • dirty blue;
  • terracotta and other shades of red, brown.

They are complemented by dark green, swamp, beige tones. The main colors in the industrial style are always dim, calm. Often apply the principle of monochrome in interior design. When one primary color – for example, gray – is used, decomposed into shades. A vivid example of this is when light walls turn into a darker saturated floor.

Lamps are mounted on tripods, hanging chains, other factory fixtures. For their installation, any mechanisms and styling are suitable for them.

Lamp shades and chandeliers are made of:

  • ordinary glass;
  • pressed, thick glass;
  • metal with traces of patina;
  • varnished metal.

The shape of the shades is diverse. Use laconic spherical chandeliers or in the form of complex structures mounted on a grate. Fit into the industrial style and ordinary Edison lamps with open wiring. They are often combined into small lighting installations.

The design of floor or table lamps refers to industrial lamps used in sewing or milling industries at the beginning of the 20th century. They are mounted on flexible or movable tripods.

Industrial style decor

The interior in an industrial style is based on minimalism, so there should not be many elements of decor. To create a complete design use:

  • fragments of signs or billboards;
  • graffiti on the walls;
  • elements of factory structures: pipes, ducts, fittings, chains;
  • street lamps, elements of the outdoor decor of bars and cafes of the early XX century;
  • installations from “industrial waste”.

Black and white photographs in unusual, concise frames will complement the interior. To give comfort and reduce the degree of aggressiveness, indoor plants in floor pots, shabby rugs or small fluffy carpets are used.

Industrial style furniture is divided into three broad categories:

  • Vintage, antique industrial furniture.
  • Modern copies and stylization.
  • Furniture made from elements of industrial artifacts.

Vintage, industrial furniture is a combination of minimalist design and enhanced functionality. In flea markets you can find old work chairs, workbenches or shelving.
